Mythology
Indian culture, tradition, and even their everyday lives revolve around myths, legends, and stories of their many gods. The Mahabharata is a vast compendium of myths, legends, and stories. Hindus are polytheistic, meaning that they believe in many gods. However, the three major gods are Brahma, the creator, Vishnu, the sustainer, and Shiva, the destroyer. However major Brahma is, he is not as important as Vishnu and Shiva, and therefore isn’t worshipped or favored like Vishnu or Shiva due to the obsession over his daughter, Saraswati.
Any other gods than the three major ones are called devas. Some devas are Indra, Yama, Varuna, and Agni. Indra rules the devas and is the king of heaven. Yama rules hell and is god of the dead. Varuna guarantees the order of the universe. Agni is the god of fire who brings sacrifices to the other gods with his smoke. Some other gods are asuras. These are evil beings who constantly fight and are at combat with the devas. Rakshasas are demons who help the asuras fight the devas.
